Newsquawk European Market Wrap - 20th October 2026
Newsquawk Staff ·
- European bourses were broadly lower, whilst US equity futures are mixed.
- USD was mildly pressured; GBP outperformed post-jobs data; OAT-Bund spread widened to 155bps.
- Crude benchmarks were off best levels after reports of a "compromise proposal" between the US and Iran.
EQUITIES
- European bourses are set to end Tuesday’s European trade in the red, but off worst levels as energy benchmarks pull back from earlier highs. Helping the downside in the energy complex was a report by Al Araby Al Jadeed, which stated that Pakistan’s Army Chief presented a Qatar-Pakistan proposal to Iranian officials today which has US approval and has previously received Iranian approval.
- Sectors held their negative bias. Health Care topped the sector pile, with Utilities and Optimised Personal Care rounding out the sector gainers. Industrials remained the sector laggard, with Basic Resources and Tech completing the sector laggards.
- Top stories include: ABB -5.8%, despite orders that surpassed expectations on high demand for electric components, while also announcing a JV with Mitsubishi Electric; Schneider Electric -3.9%, read-across from tech selloff and the launch of its EUR 6bln capital increase; Solvay -4.9%, Q3 Adj. EBITDA missed estimates due to the Middle East conflict.
- US cash equities opened mixed, with underperformance in the NDX as tech names resume their selloff. Today was the day for US defence earnings, with RTX, Northrop Grumman and GE Aerospace reporting. The broad outcome was a positive one. Focus after-hours will be on SpaceX and Netflix.
FX
- Snapshot: G10s were broadly firmer against the softer USD today. Initial outperformance was seen in the Kiwi, but into afternoon the GBP took pole position, as markets digested a decent jobs report, which plays in favour of hiking rates in the near-term. The Loonie continued to benefit from this week’s hawkish repricing at the BoC, with money markets now assigning a c. 80% chance of a hike this month (vs last week’s 34% chance).
- USD was under mild pressure this morning, with the index set to end the London session towards the bottom end of a 101.70 to 101.98 range. Really not much driving the action today, with US-specific news flow light; pressure could be associated with the slight drift lower in yields.
- In geopolitics, focus was on a source report via Al Araby Al Jadeed which suggested that the Pakistani Army Chief presented a “compromise proposal”, formulated by Qatar and Pakistan, that meets demands made by both the US and Iran. Everything remains at early stages thus far, but the path to diplomacy appears to be well under way.
- EUR held toward the bottom of the G10 pile, with focus remaining on the French civil unrest, and the widening OAT-Bund spread. That breached the recent peak of 151bps, to make another multi-year high at 155bps. Further adding to the negative sentiment was a poor EZ ZEW survey, which fell from the prior, and by more than expected.
FIXED
- Global fixed benchmarks were mixed. USTs (+5 ticks) were firmer by a handful of ticks, with higher energy prices appearing to no longer weigh on the benchmark. Some of the earlier strength may be attributed to a strong JGB auction overnight, which saw the 20yr garner a b/c beyond the 5x mark.
- Elsewhere, Bunds (+40 ticks) also moved higher, on the back of poor EZ ZEW metrics, and perhaps some flight-to-quality, given the ongoing deterioration in French bonds. On that note, the OAT-Bund spread has breached its near term high at 151bps, to make a fresh peak at 155bps – a level not seen since 2012. A move which comes amidst the ongoing civil unrest in France, which appears to be having some spillover across other major European cities. This comes at an already sensitive fiscal situation in France; to remind, French lawmakers were set to vote on the draft bill today, but it has been pushed back to October 27, as a number of amendments are still yet to be discussed.
- Gilts remained the day’s underperformer, and are set to end the London session around the unchanged mark, within an 83.85 to 84.14 range. Underperformance stemmed from higher energy prices, but perhaps more pertinently for today was a decent jobs report. A set of metrics which plays into the hands of those on the MPC who will push for a hike in November.
- Head of French Public Debt Management said that the agency has not seen selling by Japanese investors in French public debt.
- US options buyer again targets 5.3% 10-yr yield by month-end, Bloomberg reported; Familiar options flow seen again on Tuesday, via large buyer of 10-yr weekly options in a position that targets US 10-yr yields to rise ~20bps by the Oct. 30 expiry date.

COMMODITIES

The proposal that the Pakistani army chief presented to Iranian officials today has American approval and has also received prior Iranian approval. The mediation presented a proposal that was met with a positive response from both parties, involving the payment of USD 6bln in interest, which represents Iranian funds frozen in Qatari banks. The proposal includes a "partial response" to the Iranian demand to return frozen Iranian funds. What it means
Daily wraps of this kind earn their keep when one thread ties the session together, and here it is the Gulf: crude spiked on Strait of Hormuz escalation and then handed back the move on a single source report of a US-Iran compromise proposal, the classic sequence in Hormuz episodes where the risk premium prices faster than it verifies and unwinds on the first credible diplomatic channel. The tell in past rounds of this kind has been freight, insurance and prompt spreads rather than the headline flat price, and the divergence between official Iranian denials of mediation and the mediator's claims is the standard fog that precedes either confirmation or a fresh tanker incident. The second thread is France, where the OAT-Bund spread pushing through prior peaks on civil unrest and a delayed budget vote follows the established pattern of domestic political stress repricing the periphery-adjacent sovereign before the ECB is drawn in; prior episodes of French spread widening have tended to persist until either the fiscal path is resolved or the central bank's backstop language firms. The UK jobs beat feeding straight into November MPC hike pricing, and the BoC's sharp hawkish repricing over a week, illustrate how quickly front ends re-anchor when a single data print lands against a finely balanced committee. The repeated large options flow targeting a higher 10-year yield by month-end is the kind of persistent positioning signal that has historically mattered more for its persistence than its size. What follows is verification of the Iran channel, the rescheduled French budget vote, and whether the energy complex re-risks on the next Hormuz headline.
