China's MOFCOM, on EU trade talks, says under the trade and investment consultation mechanism has yielded several achievements and consensuses
Newsquawk Staff ·
- Based on the principles of mutual respect and equal consultation, both sides conducted intensive consultations on trade in hybrid and electric vehicles, balancing trade differences and mutual concerns.
- No measures will be specifically targeted at Chinese products, let alone discriminatory treatment of Chinese companies. China's quota will not be lower than that of any other EU import source.
- On the basis of equality and mutual benefit, the above consensus effectively safeguards the actual interests of Chinese enterprises, prevents the escalation of trade frictions between China and the EU.
What it means
Announcements of consensus after bilateral consultation rounds are a familiar pattern in China-EU trade diplomacy: both sides have historically preferred managed outcomes with quota and monitoring arrangements over open escalation, and the language of no discriminatory treatment follows the template of past sectoral accommodations. The substance here is the electric and hybrid vehicle track, where the risk had been tit-for-tat measures; negotiated quantity and treatment commitments have tended, in comparable disputes, to cap the immediate escalation tail while leaving the underlying structural grievance unresolved. The transmission channel runs through CNH and the euro via trade-war premium rather than through rate differentials: de-escalation headlines of this kind have typically trimmed haven demand at the margin and supported China-sensitive FX, with the dollar reaction in the DXY being second-order. The relevant distinction is between a signed mechanism with enforceable quotas and a communiqué of intent; only the former has historically held, and MOFCOM readouts have on past occasions run ahead of what Brussels confirms. What is worth watching is the EU side's own statement, any detail on quota levels and duration, and whether parallel tracks on other goods quiet down, since single-sector fixes in this relationship have tended to be followed by friction migrating elsewhere.
