RBI is to conduct second 3-day variable rate reverse repo auction for INR 1.5tln under its LAF today
Variable rate reverse repo auctions of this kind are the RBI's standard instrument for draining surplus liquidity from the banking system, and a second operation in quick succession signals the liquidity overhang has persisted beyond what the first auction absorbed.

The distinction worth drawing is between fine-tuning operations within the liquidity adjustment framework and a shift in stance: multi-day VRRR tenors push banks to place funds with the central bank at market-determined rates, which historically firms up overnight and short-tenor money market rates toward the upper end of the corridor without touching the policy rate itself. Whether these auctions are fully subscribed is the usual tell, since undersubscription would indicate system liquidity is tighter than the operation assumes, while strong demand confirms the surplus. Repeat auctions of this size have in past episodes preceded a more durable recalibration of liquidity management, so the follow-ons are the cut-off rate relative to the standing facilities, the pattern of WACR prints, and any communication framing the operations as temporary versus structural. As an operations announcement rather than a policy decision, the signal concerns the short end of the rupee curve and money market spreads, not the repo rate path.
