US EQUITY OPEN: Indices weighed by Warsh nominated as next Fed Chair
Analysis details (14:59)
OPEN: US indices are in the red, with sectors also seeing downside bias with Materials the laggard. Health is the only one in the green. Through the morning, the Dollar has seen notable strength, to the detriment of G10 peers, while USTs and US indices were lower, with precious metals slammed amid the Warsh speculation to be Fed Chair, which has since been confirmed. US Treasuries are now mixed, with the short-end seeing gains but long-end still lower. We have continued to get numerous earnings since AMC on Thursday (highlights below), but two standouts include Apple ( ) despite initial strength, and a stellar report from SanDisk ( ). With Fed blackout concluding, we have already heard from Bostic, who is retiring in Feb, and dissenter Waller who favoured a 25bps cut because policy is still restricting activity too much, and the labour market does not look remotely healthy. Ahead, other dissenter Miran is scheduled for a couple of appearances, with Musalem and Bowman also due. PPI was firmer than anticipated, but markets saw little move. The crude complex is seeing slight gains, although it started on the backfoot as it was partially driven by the stronger greenback, but primarily by comments from Trump, who said he plans to have talks with Tehran and hopes the US do not have to use the big, powerful ship.
