ASIA
Asia-Pac equities traded higher across the board following the tailwinds from Wall Street, in which the US majors saw a relief rally on geopolitical optimism. That being said, President Biden said it was not verified whether Russia pulled some troops and suggested an invasion of Ukraine is still very much a possibility. Further, participants look ahead to the FOMC Minutes on Wednesday, but the January meeting took place before both the rock-solid Jan NFP print and the above-forecast Jan CPI, so will not reflect any hawkish shifts in sentiment driven by the most recent data. Nonetheless, US equity futures held onto most of yesterday’s gains. In APAC, the ASX 200 was kept afloat by its Healthcare sector, although gains are capped by losses in Energy and Metal names. The Nikkei 225 and KOSPI both benefit from a strong tech sector, whilst the former also buoyed by favourable Yen dynamics. The Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp are both firmer, although the latter lacks momentum after a daily PBoC drain and following yesterday’s maintained MLF rate – which likely means the February LPRs will also be held.
