4th FEBRUARY 2016

ASIA

Asian equities traded mostly in the green, bolstered by the turn around in energy stocks following WTI crude futures rising by over 8% in the US, while also drawing comfort from a late rally on Wall Street . As such, the ASX 200 (+2.1%) had been underpinned by energy and material names, while the Shanghai Comp (+1.3%) was also led higher by the energy, in addition the PBoC strengthened the CNY by the most since December 4th. However, Nikkei 225 (-0.9%) bucked the trend as exporters felt the brunt from the recent strength in the JPY, subsequently erased the majority of its BoJ stimulus inspired gains. JGBs finished trade flat in what was quiet session for Japanese pape

Best Performing Sectors in the Nikkei 225: Energy (+2.42%) Materials (+1.90%) Telecommunication Services (+0.82%)

Worst Performing Sectors in the Nikkei 225: Consumer Discretionary (-2.25%) Health Care (-1.99%) Consumer Staples (-1.87%)

In what was a volatile session, focus was on market drivers towards the open on Wall Street. A combination of dovish Fed commentary, disappointing ISM non-manufacturing data and dampened sentiment on the US economy saw US equities decline rapidly following their open in the green. This was pressured further by the aforementioned ISM non-manufacturing data, where the employment index (52.1) matched the lowest reading since Apr’14. Energy names outperformed after yesterday’s DoE release saw a turn-around in sentiment. The headline reading printing a larger build (+7792K) than last night’s API release (+3800K), however output fell by 0.076% which bolstered WTI crude futures to rise over 8.0% on the day. As a result the NASDAQ-100’s underperformed given lack of energy names whereas the Dow Jones outperformed, led by Exxon (+5.2%) and DuPont (+4.6%). The DJIA finished up 1.13% at 16336.66, S&P 500 finished up 0.50% at 1912.53 and the NASDAQ-100 finished down 0.50% at 4171.97.
